My Little Pony Costume Sew-Along - Day 2: The Mane
Yay, it'south time to make one of the FUN parts of the costume!
and today we'll be adding the mane to the heart seam of our hood.
For this stride you volition need:
your hood design piece – a tape measure – a pencil – a articulate filigree ruler
a rotary cutter – a self healing cutting mat (non pictured)
Offset, make a small marker along the acme of the hood showing where you would like yous mane to begin.
It should be far plenty behind your stitch line (the pinkish) then that it doesn't get caught in the fold when y'all line
or confront the forepart of your hood, and then I like to showtime mine betwixt 1″ and 1.25″ back from the cut line. (the blue)
**If you are making a Unicorn character; you will need to get out actress space for the horn.**
The blueprint I am sharing has a 1.five inch base of operations and so I propose first the mane roughly 2″ past your stitch line.
Utilize your measuring tape to determine the altitude from your new mark around the curve to the stitch line at the lower back of the hood. It doesn't demand to be an exact measurement, but you lot should have a rough idea of the length from the front to the back of your mane.
This next part was easiest to explain using paper, so bear with me…
You'll need to cutting a rectangle the length of your hood measurement by the length that you'd like the hair of your mane to exist.
For my particular hoodie; the curve of my hood was roughly xv″, and I like to cut my mane to about 7.5″ long. (so my rectangle is xv x 7.v) The height measurement is your own personal preference, and may change from one character to the next. Fluttershy has a much longer mane in the show, and then if I wanted to reverberate that I might use a 15 10 12 rectangle instead. (7.5 seems to be a good length for kids since information technology is less likely to be tangled.)
*Helpful Hint – if you cut your rectangle with the longer edge (hood measurement) following the stretch of your textile,
the strands of hair will be on the vertical grain, and be less likely to stretch out of shape if they become pulled.*
Once you have decided on the size of your rectangle you'll demand to begin cut information technology into strips to course a fringe. Over again, the strips could be whatsoever width, but I've found that I personally adopt 5/8″. Continue across the rectangle until you reach the end, and discard any small-scale leftover bit that doesn't separate evenly by your measurement. Just exist certain non to cut entirely through the rectangle. The strips should yet be fastened along one edge.
If you are sewing a multi-colored mane similar Rainbow Nuance's, you lot'll need to split your hood measurement by the appropriate number of colors and slice them together accordingly. For Rainbow Dash I have found that four 5/8″ strips of each color (for a total of 24 strips) works well for almost toddler sized hoodies. Recall, yous do not need to see the full hood measurement (15″). It is simply a guideline.
You will demand to echo the procedure at to the lowest degree in one case and so that you accept ii rows worth of fringe to run from front to dorsum on each side of the hoodie. You lot could add more than rows if yous'd like, but please recall, your sewing machine volition probably not be able to stitch through more than four layers of fleece very easily and you may take to stitch this seam by hand. Too, if you add too many rows, the hood becomes too heavy to stay upwards on information technology'south own, and yous will need to add together a very tight drawstring to go along it in place. (definitely no fun to wear.)
Once all of your strips have been cutting, transfer the original markings to your hood, and begin to pivot the mane in identify.
Here'southward an example of what Rainbow Dash should expect like…
…and this is 1 of my Twilight Sparkle versions.
(This picture shows 3 layers, just I afterwards went back and removed 1.)
Pin a row of fringe along each side of the hood, and then baste the pieces in identify.
Afterwards the fringe is securely basted, sandwich the mane between the two hood pieces
and stitch through all iv layers along the curved edge of the hood.
If y'all'd similar, go back and terminate off the raw edge with a serger, zig zag,
or 2d row of direct stitches to help reinforce the seam.
And this is what you lot should have when you plow the hood right side out! Isn't it lovely?
Nosotros'll terminate there for today, and pick support tomorrow with the zipper and the rest of the hoodie.
How is everyone doing and so far?
